FERC's purpose is to protect the public and energy customers by making sure that regulated energy companies are acting within the law.

The Commission is composed of 5 members, known as Commissioners. The Commissioners are appointed by the President of the United States with advice and consent of the Senate. There is no review of FERC's decisions by the President or Congress, making FERC independent from pressure by the branches of the government. The FERC pays for itself by recovering its annual costs from the industries it regulates.

FERC is responsible for:

Regulating the interstate transmission of natural gas, oil and electricity

Regulating the wholesale sales of electricity and oil

Licensing and inspecting hydroelectric projects

Approving the construction of Interstate natural gas pipelines, storage facilities and liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals.

<img border="0" src="/attachments/users/7/wysiwyguploads/Image/Bobcat newsletter graphics.jpg" alt="Bobcat Storage energy" style="width: 335px;
